Today, when many people in the world with hope and joy prepare to celebrate the birth of our saviour, it is especially difficult to comprehend the loss of such young life. Because death is not pretty. Death is offencive. Death is like a thief - it comes and takes away without asking. So here we are now, mourning the loss of a daughter, a sister, a mother and of many other things whom Loubna was and is no more. Our family knew Loubna since her high school. She was a friend of our daughter Gabi and a frequent guest in our house. Sometimes she would come and leave through the window instead of using doors. She was a troubled soul who lived bending rules, running away and often disappeared for a long periods of time. But she was coming back looking for shelter and acceptance. She wanted to be included, she wanted to participate. When we moved to a new place, Loubna was there helping with packing and unpacking our stuff. She helped Gabi to paint her room and even left her a secret message in the closet. Loubna was a generous, warm person; she was eager to be a part of something bigger than herself. Sometimes Loubna would take Noah and come with us to church. When our church did an outreach to homeless people in Milpitas, Loubna was so excited to join. She prepared a few nicely decorated packages, where she put items that any lady who lives on a street might enjoy. During that time she was friendly and engaged, listening to the people and sharing with them all she had to offer. I know that she cared and felt for them. In such moments you could see she was happy to feel purpose in her life and happy to share whatever she had. And she had abundance of love to share. Loubna loved her french family, and often spoke with adoration about small cute things she liked doing while back in Europe. She loved all things French. But most of all she loved her son Noah. We all were witnesses of that love. She shared pictures, she asked to take more of them. Her daily routines were filled with fun and more fun for that boy of her heart. In the future, Loubna even dreamed of bringing him to the french school. But this dream is not meant to be fulfilled, because she’s gone and the love she had there is no more. About 2000 years ago apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthian church: Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7New International Version (NIV) At the end, we don’t know if Loubna found this kind of love. We weren’t there. We have no clue, if she opened her heart for God to enter and found peace and safety in His arms. It’s not for us to say, what happened when her life ended. What I can say is that at moments like this we, who keep on living, should not shun away from hearing a wake up call. While there is still time given to us, least we can do is to examine our own hearts and make commitment to accepting a free gift of life and salvation.
