This memorial was created in honor of Karl Rind of Toronto, Ontario. Karl was born on July 1, 1933 in Offenbach, GERMANY and passed on April 30, 2016. Karl was loved by many and will be dearly missed by all friends and family.

Karl enjoyed life with sly wit and good math.

Karl was a leathersmith by trade, coming to Newfoundland from Germany in 1956 to teach his trade at a shoe and glove factory in Harbour Grace. In 1968, the family packed up and moved to Ontario. Toronto to be precise, where he worked for the same company (although it changed names 4 times during his career), Acme Paper Products, Reed Paper, Domtar Inc, Norampac. Eventually managing the shipping department and a fleet of almost 100 trucks. This in a time before computer use in business and GPS.

Karl retired to his gardens, perfectly manicured lawns free of weeds. In actuality, I think his yelling at the weeds in German was authority enough to scare them away. Tomatoes by the bowl and endlessly chasing the birds away from his red currants.

A passion for cooking all from scratch and recipes in his head, he enjoyed his food and got a lot joy out of people who also liked his cooking. Two specialties Rouladen and the best plum cakes ever. For a few years, some of the plums from his own tree.

He could teach a course in the proper way to pour beer in a glass, how to enjoy it and at the end, how to properly clean the glassware. For him, beer was to be savored, always in a glass, VERY VERY rarely straight from a can or bottle.

Karl eventually "retired" to Moll Berczy Haus in North Scarborough, where he joined a a new crop of German friends in what we could call Little Bavaria. A German speaking retirement home with good people, and vibrant discussion about "the old country".

Karl left us on April 30, not for us to be sad, but to remember the good times, laughs and of course the singing at his birthday parties.
