Kaitlin volunteered at the main Hillsboro library for nearly 13 years amassing over 1100 hours of service. She was one of our super star shelvers who rarely missed a Friday, and she was always on time! We missed her on the 10th, but didn't know anything had happened, when we found out the following day we were beyond stunned. We will miss her smiling face, her cheery greetings, and of course her regular trips to the candy bowl! She so loved our never ending candy bowl! To honor her, we're getting a new candy bowl engraved with "Kaitlin's Kandy! Help yourself"! She will never be forgotten and always in the hearts of her library family.

I have been struggling to find the words for 11 days. My sweet, dear niece Kaitlin left all of us here on earth to go and be with Our Lord in Heaven on January 10th. It was unexpected and happened so fast. I won't share the most private details of her passing at this time, but at my sister's request, I will share Kate's beautiful send off given by the staff at St. Vincent's Hospital as she traveled to the operating room to give the gift of her organs to others so they may go on living and seeing.

But first I must explain that Kate loved pajamas more than just about anything. If she had the chance I think she would have worn them everywhere and at anytime. Given that, you should know that she had many pair of pj's and loved them all.

My sister Terry, Kate's mother, extended me the privilege of participating in the Walk of Honor which is provided to organ donors by the staff at St. Vincent's as the patient is wheeled that final journey to the operating room. In thinking of Kate and what she loved, Terry asked if I would wear pajamas and she would wear them as well. I said "of course". Then she asked if I would like to wear one of Kate's favorite pair, and I absolutely agreed.

There aren't enough words that I am able to come up with at this time to adequately describe the Walk of Honor. Kate's family walked behind as her bed was wheeled down two long corridors lined on the side by hundreds of St. Vincent's doctors, nurses and other staff. And as we passed in our pajamas every single one of them was doing the "Katie clap" with tears in their eyes. This clap was one done only by our Kate, as far as we ever knew. It consisted of placing your hands, palms together, then only "clapping with your fingers" while keeping your palms held together. It was always the way she showed happiness and joy and it was her special clap.

So today, in Kate's honor, I'd like to share a couple pictures of her in her beloved pajamas and lastly, me, wearing her cheetah pj's, doing the "Katie clap", and holding her stuffed baby elephant. These photos will be in The Gallery on this site.

And after you look at her pictures I'd like to ask you to send up a prayer for Kate, her parents Terry and Mike, and her sister Mary. And then do the "Katie Clap" for just a few moments. Thank you.

Kate was one of my VERY favorite students, ever! Funny, smart, kind and always with a giant smile on her face. I remember how nearly every day we walked the halls together at lunch at Liberty High School. We would walk and sing as I pushed another student in a wheelchair around. He howled with laughter as we made up crazy songs and sang every oldie we could think of as loud as we dared. Kate's favorite was Oh, Sweet Pea. I always called her Sweet Pea. I would say, "Hey Sweet Pea... and then she would look at me and start to sing with a twinkle in her eye. Everyday I told her I wanted her beautiful skin and would she please share it with me. She would laugh and pretend to be indigent and say "Jody, its my skin and you just can't have it!" Then she would trot off laughing. Such fun memories of an amazing young woman as beautiful on the inside as on the outside. Pure and simple, she was a ray of sunshine which shared its beauty for a short time, then was needed elsewhere. I know I am richer that she poured some of that sunshine on me.
