I loved having Ed in my fitness class at the Wake Center. He didn't really take to the class that Ky comes to in the morning, but when he joined my afternoon strength class he became an attentive and determined participant. He was willing to try all the exercises, even ones that were a bit risky for him as a new student, which was a little scary for me at times. ("Ed, hold on to the chair when we do this.") It was my pleasure to see his determination and perseverance come to fruition as he mastered the various activities. Ed always stood in the same spot in class. I think of him there each time I teach.

Ed is about ten years older than me. He met my sister while he was going to Yale and Ky was going to Smith. We grew up in the deep south in Baton Rouge, while Ed grew up in the northeast. When Ed came down to "meet the parents" he promptly stepped in some fire ants; they were very widespread at the time. We thought that would be the last we'd see of Ed (while Ed became an ardent conservationist I think he always made an exception for fire ants). My brother and I determined to put Ed to the test (we were about 12 and 13 and made a pretty obnoxious pair (one of our favorite tactics was to call the current boyfriend by the name of the previous boyfriend). But we soon learned that Ed could not only take it he could dish it out and he passed the test. Their wedding was a "big deal" in Baton Rouge. Ed had a little rebellious streak also. He was amazed to find out how available fireworks were in Louisiana; they were apparently unavailable under any circumstances in New Haven Connecticut. Ed took several skyrockets back in his airline luggage (this is before TSA) and fired them off in the middle of the night on the Yale Campus while evading capture, displaying skills he later honed in the Army as a Green Beret. The family was a little amused when after retiring and moving to Goleta to be near family, Ed was elected to the City Council. Then we were amazed when he became Mayor. Ed worked hard for the things he believed in and was able to make a difference. We are very proud of him; he will be missed.
