Current Memories

Another memory of Grandpa was his love of word art on Microsoft. He put so much effort into his card creations and we were lucky enough to receive some cracking Christmas cards over the years. I’ve kept them all and will be up in the attic soon to dig them or from the Christmas decorations boxes! (Also remembering the enthusiastic use of the English language when something went wrong with the PC or his current design layout wasn’t behaving.)

Some of the most vivid memories of my childhood are our wonderful holidays to Pauanui Beach staying with Grandma and Grandpa King. It was a magical spot and Grandpa delighted in seeing myself and brother and sister enjoy ourselves whether it be on a fishing trip, bodyboarding and playing in the waves or racing our wooden boat creations up and down the little creek. I remember his never ending vendetta against the possums in the back garden who ate his passion fruits as well as our matching love if Grandma’s famous almond biscuits. As a young girl I would enjoy cuddling up in the mornings with Grandma and Grandpa and “help” them learn their lines for their forthcoming amateur dramatic productions. I remember the year Grandpa was Buffalo Bill himself and Grandma his sidekick Fanny! I loved writing stories and Grandpa was very encouraging to me and we enjoyed him reading us stories on the bean bags upstairs in the Pauanui House mezzanine. I think it’s amazing that Grandpa had the foresight and determination to capture his life story - and Grandma’s a decade or so ago. It’s the most unbelievable story and makes us all very proud. As we grew up and Grandma and Grandpa moved to Noosa, we continued to enjoy wonderful family holidays in their special spot. I remember boasting to my friends that my Grandparents helped deliver meals on wheels to the elderly! They loved their exercise and regularly swam lengths across the canal (despite warnings from Charlie about the bull shark)... so many happy times cycling on the water on Grandpa’s favourite toy. The blue ropes for Grandpa’s back exercises remain vivid in my memory. More recently Grandpa opened his home up to myself and various friends I was travelling with. He loved sending us off to the Australia Zoo and Eumundi Markets and enjoyed us using the pool (as long as we didn’t splash too much!) Grandpa opened his arms to my boyfriend and then husband Jon. He was “a westcountry lad” like him, keen on his rugby and so ticked all the boxes. I’ll always remember the affection Grandpa had for Jon and when he met our son, his Great-Grandson Harry in November 2014 - the last time we made it down to Noosa. We live such a long way away which is such a great shame that we’ve not been able to see more of Grandpa in his later years but we live 10minutes away from where Grandpa trained with the RAF at St Mawgan in Newquay, Cornwall - also the village where we got married. So a little piece of Grandpa has always been close by to us and we’ll continue to honour and remember him from here, his home for a short while. Love you Grandpa - we treasure the memories and remember you always. Jodie, Jon, Harry, Grace and bump xxx

My favourite memories of Grandpa are all at Seleta in Singapore. Grandpa was always so much fun and would always take me for rides in the wheelbarrow,I was devastated when I became too big for this game. I also have memories of being taken for rides on the back of his bike. I will also never forget his exercise routine on the ropes he attached to the door frame. He would even bring them on holiday when he came to visit us in Hong Kong. Oh and his singing. He was always the loudest and proudest whilst singing in the church choir. RIP Grandpa you will be greatly missed xxx
