Friends for over 50 years now...... starting with meeting in junior high, on through early high school and now all these many years later; Elizabeth (Mercedes step-daughter) and I shared many scrumptious lunches at Mercedes table. Nice walks from high school, through 15th Street Park, a few empty lots...and then to Mr. Cowles and Mercedes home.......where Mercedes served up the most delicious tacos or hamburgers or a very tasty tuna noodle casserole. I don’t think Elizabeth or I did much talking......too busy enjoying whatever Mercedes had for lunch that particular day. Boy was her cooking good!!! And I always felt welcomed!

Mercedes always rolled out the hospitality carpet and made us feel welcome any time we went for a visit. She did make the best hamburgers ever.

Mercedes loved her two peacocks. Normally, she kept them in a pretty big cage but would let them out to run around in the yard. My grand-daughter had so much fun running around with the peacocks.

I always knew her as “nana.” She loved birds and had a little toy bird cage with two little yellow birds in it. When I was very young we were visiting nana and tata, when I found the bird cage sitting somewhere in their house. I was fascinated with the tiny birds. She noticed how much I liked the bird cage and gave it to me. I can still remember the drive home, imagining that the tiny birds were real.
