Christy and I were saddened to learn of Walt's passing but we know he is in good hands now! Unfortunately we were on travel at the time of the memorial service but we did want to post this.
We met Walt years ago when we were members at St. Peters and, of course, had many outings together with the church "camping group" led by our mutual friend Don. Walt and I were attorneys and we often shared "warstories" from the trenches over the years! And, I read where we were both born in San Berdo...although a few years apart! Most people are "from" San Berdo as my Dad use to say!
Walt is/was a wonderful, gracious, and quiet person...the right temperament!
May God continue to bless him and his family.

I grew up with Walt. Well, actually he was already grown up while I was growing up. See, Stan and I became fast friends around 6 or 7 years old. We hardly left each other's side for the next ten years or so. And Walt was always there. (So were Ethel, Doug and Cindy, of course.) Walt proved to be such a steady and strong influence for me that I'm sure he had a hand in shaping the man, husband, and father that I am today. Quiet, patient, strong, hard working, caretaker of the family and their friends and neighbors -- those are my memories of Walt. Any man would be lucky to be imbued with those same qualities. I'm grateful for having Walt as a father figure in my life.
Stan and I are still the best of friends more than 50 years later. I've watched him grow to become much like his father in many ways, especially his constant creativity. Seems he's always building the next cool thing or volunteering to help with this or that. I know he gets that from his dad. So I also know that Walt is still with us in Stan.
I'm heartbroken that I'm unable to be with you all for the celebration of Walt's life today. My family joins me in sending prayers, hugs, and cheer to Doug, Stan, Cindy, and all of Walt's family and friends.

Walt's cousin Ed, in the summer time would stay with the Foster family. Aunt Eliza (Walt's mother) would teach cousin Ed "phonics" and after the week was over, Uncle Roy promised the 3 boys; Walt, Vernon and Ed, that he would take them to downtown Los Angeles on the PE Line. First we would have dinner at Clifton's Cafeteria. Aunt Eliza made sure we wore a white shirt and a tie. Then after dinner we would go to a nice theatre and then go down main street to view all the "dime" movies.
This is where we saw for the first time, someone selling popcorn and peanuts up and down the aisles in the theatre.
We would catch the last PE street car of the night and get home at 1 or 2 in the morning. This is a great memory!

After Walt graduated from High School he came to live with Aunt Etta and Uncle Ed Smith's family before he joined the army. The only thing Walt wanted for his graduation was a pair of white leather shoes and his aunt and uncle bought them for him. He was THRILLED, Walt wore them EVERYWHERE! Ed and Doris Smith
