I will always remember Cynthia as a smiling, always willing to help member of our AAUW branch. She was our publicity director and always cheerful and willing to help. Her involvement in AAUW could always be counted on as could her kindness toward everyone. I had so hoped for her to have better times after arriving at her new home close to Samantha. Cynthia, you will be missed.

I'm sorry about Cynth, a lovely sister-in-law, adventurer and dedicated language teacher: She, Art and Samantha were the first members of the extended Hammond family that I met in 1990, and I felt so welcome in their Bakersfield home. Sam, I believe, was seven-ish, and we spent one evening decorating her dollhouse with tiny pix cut from magazines and framed with toothpicks. On another evening they took us to "Wool Growers" for supper which was a real treat as I hadn't a clue about Basque cuisine, yet loved it. When they moved to Hot Springs Village I was excited for them, loved the vibe of the town mostly because of its cafes and art galleries. Cynth and I had spa treatments at Buckstaff Baths and were tickled to experience the metal spa cabinet contraptions that leave only the head exposed. You might recall a hilarious Lucille Ball comedy episode where the locking mechanism malfunctioned on hers. Most recently, Cynth passed through here on a CA road trip down memory lane. She happened to be here during my first night of teaching ESL. While helping me get my class materials in order, Cynth asked what I had in mind for "the warm-up." I took a long, hard gulp and choked down the words, "Warm-up?" She gave a quick explanation followed by an idea. Seconds later we found ourselves writing clues on index cards, and then she and Dale sent me on my merry way. Cynth was spot on, and the success of that first class wouldn't have happened without her helping hands and sage advice. Sadly, her last year wasn't her best; at times her suffering seemed so unnecessary, unfair for such a vivacious woman. But happily, Cynth had many, many good years and lived a full life. This is how I'll remember her... "A bientôt, ma chérie"!!!
