Nadine Abernathy returned to her heavenly home on June 2, 2017 after a long and valiant battle with a series of debilitating illnesses. Her tireless love for her family and her firm belief in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, gave her the grace to endure, the faith to see brighter days and finally, everlasting peace.

Nadine was born to Leon Bowen (deceased) and Lutelia Bowen on September 10, 1943 in New Castle, Alabama. She was married to Charles Marvin Abernathy (deceased) of the U.S. Air Force on April 19, 1969. To this union, the birth of two children: Carla Maria and Ceceli Melissa. She received Christ at an early age and was an active member of True Vine Missionary Baptist Church in Toledo Ohio.

She attended Bowling Green State University and Wilberforce University, respectively, earning her degree in Early Childhood Education. She adored children and taught for many years in the Toledo school system under the Head Start program. Many of her former students would later contact her in their adult years to thank her for being a positive influence in their young lives.

Nadine had a creative and gregarious spirit; she was a lover of the arts and created many beautiful ceramic pieces which are proudly displayed by family and friends. She played the piano and enjoyed dancing and listening music of all genres. She participated in her local community with a strong desire to bring awareness to issues facing marginalized members of society. If you were sad or worried, Nadine would point out all the wonderful things in your life for you. A kid at heart, she had a charming habit of calling those whom she was most fond special endearments, such as "Turtle Toes" or “Pudding’ Pop”.

Nadine eventually moved to Dayton Ohio and became a faithful member of Greater Love Christian Church. She enjoyed Biblical Storytelling and is remembered for her expressive and dramatic interpretation of select Bible passages.

Nadine is survived by her loving mother, Lutelia Bowen; devoted daughters, Carla and Ceceli; her dear sister, Toni Ann Gregory; niece and nephews, Nicole, Michael and Kyle Gregory and, her beloved grand-daughter, Lilliana Faith McKinney. Nadine regarded her grand-daughter Lilliana as her ultimate treasure and inspiration. Lilliana provided great joy and hope for Nadine in her final days, giving her the will to endure!

Nadine is also survived by a host of loving cousins, far and wide, who kept her faithfully lifted in prayer. The unending support of family, friends and her Church home gave her the courage to fight the good fight of faith until she was mercifully called home to Glory.
