From his niece, Brenda (Bartels) Abbatiello. Who could forget Uncle Duane's phone greeting, "Hello d'ere!" We always knew as kids that Uncle Duane loved us. As an adult, I was struck not only with the strength of his faith and how easily he shared it, but with the importance he put on being a person of integrity. He cared deeply about issues and doing what he could to make the world a better place. He would write a letter, invent something new to help people, argue with you fiercely, but usually try to listen, too. Talented and brilliantly smart, he loved his family deeply. Sometimes episodes of mental illness and later health issues would get him off track and greatly impact his life, but with a helping hand from supportive family and friends, he was soon optimistically meeting whatever life challenges he faced with cheerfulness, grace, and faith. Now he is investigating the wonders of heaven. Of course, he wants us all to meet him there, too, one day, and he would ask you if you were ready. Love you, Uncle Duane.

From: Bryan Bartels Saturday, September 23, 2017
From his nephew, Bryan Bartels. I love my Uncle Duane. He always had time to fish with me. He took me and some of my pilot friends out on his boat to fish for rock bass off of Pt Loma, San Diego. He always caught most of the fish and would tease when I could not figure out his secrets. He has a child like faith in His Savior, Jesus and brought great comfort to me with rock solid words of faithful encouragement when his sister, my mother Donna went to Heaven. I have no doubt he is with her today and with his Mom and Dad. He always provided me with an almost military style of encouragement while growing up. "Stand up straight and strong", He would say, "Make us proud!"
