Hello. Thank you to everyone who came today to support my family in the passing of Edison David. For those who don’t know me, my name is Eyleies, and I am one of his three grandchildren. My grandfather touched the lives of everyone here today through his power of love. Although these past three years have been hard on my family and I, they could never compare to the last year without him. In writing my speech I was advised towards storytelling however, the truth is no one story would be able to captivate the most ardent love my baba possessed. I simply cannot fixate on one moment when I saw this very passion the most because I was too busy living in it. Beginning every day with orange, yellow, white, or red roses trimmed fresh from the garden and ending those very days the silliest faces he could provide are part of the very reason why one story will not do. But what I can tell you is what an amazing man he was, not just as a father or a grandfather but also as a role model and a hero to many. For ten years my baba played soccer for the Iraq national football team and was well known as the best player of his time. He was honored for his playing by the Iraqi League and East Germany. But his soccer career did not end there. For 25 years he ran the “Eddie David Soccer Camp” passing down his courage and passion to inspire children to not only be better players but also better people. This man had love and compassion towards everyone he met, and I believe the number of faces full of sorrow attests to that. He was not perfect, but he tried his absolute hardest to show everyone here that he cared. Even during his many years traveling around the world and shaking the hands of kings, queens, and famous people from every corner of this planet; nothing meant more to him than to hug his family and be back in his home. He passed down the trait of happiness throughout us all with just the very notion of a smile. As I come to a close, I wanted to highlight my baba's favorite verse. John 3:18 says “Let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.” It is my utmost belief that my grandfather lived out the verse to the best of his ability and I encourage us all to follow in his footsteps and do the same. Thank you.

I met Eddie David in 1983, the first year he came to Sonora to conduct soccer camps and coaching clinics for Tuolumne County Youth Soccer. My children attended their first soccer camp with Eddie that year. I soon began coordinating Eddie’s TCYS soccer camps and coaching clinics he held here for 27 years. I learned an enormous amount about soccer skills and coaching methods from him over the years which helped me successfully coach both youth and high school soccer teams from 1983-2004.
Eddie fell in love with the Sonora community the first year he came here from his home in Modesto. He liked our friendly people, our foothill area and admired that our community supported its soccer program so well. His dedication over the years was a major factor in making Tuolumne County Youth Soccer a highly successful organization. He brought his soccer knowledge here based on his vast international playing experience, and his personable and generous manner made him an instant and enduring success.
Eddie taught players essential soccer skills and coaches the methods for successfully managing players and teams. The annual summer soccer camps he held for players from six to 16 years old were terrifically successful, as attested to by high attendance year–after-year. Eddie taught players and coaches using a totally positive approach, never criticizing and always praising effort and encouraging improvement. Over the years, Eddie taught soccer skills to over 3000 camp enrollees and coaching methods to over 600 coaches. Soccer camp venues varied over the years – from the Sonora Dome the first year to local schools then on to Standard Park for most of the years.
The personal traits that endeared me the most to Eddie were his positivity of life, generosity, and his fabulous story telling. He was always smiling, happy and friendly with everyone he met in our mountain community. He was also generous helping others any way he could, and I’ll never forget that his generosity extended to always paying the lunch bill no matter how many in a group! Honestly, I don’t think he let me ever pay a cent in the many, many years we had lunches together in Sonora! Yet perhaps our most interesting times were when he told of his travels and travails during his international playing years. Once he got started he could mesmerize me and others with exciting tales of games he played, about other cultures he was exposed to, and more than a few times close calls with other-country rules and laws. What a storyteller!
In 2007, on Eddie’s 25th year of service to Tuolumne County Youth Soccer, the league dedicated its season to him. For the entire season, a banner honoring him was flown above the entry to the league’s playing fields called Standard Park in Sonora.
Eddie was admired by the thousands of players, parents and other spectators in the Sonora area that he met and helped with soccer for so many years. He was a wonderful ambassador for soccer and is truly a legend in our soccer community. For me, it was an honor to have been graced by such a sincere friend for over 30 years.

In remembering Edison, we can be thankful that he's left behind a legacy of friendship, camaraderie, and all that is best in sportsmanship.
He was respected by his peers and admired by those he mentored. I never met him on the playing field, yet his reputation was such that one
couldn't help but admire him both for his zest and his humanity. His loss rests heavily on my mind, and i send my sincere sympathies to Mary,
who shared his life, and to all others in his family.

When I look back on the life that my grandfather lived there are two attributes that stand out above all the others. These include his passion to live a life that glorified our Heavenly Father and his humbleness about his accomplishments.

My grandfather never swayed in his relationship with Jesus Christ. In every aspect of his life, he kept his faith as the most important part. When a storm would come his way, he held firm to the one true strong foundation. It is because of his unwavering faith, that my family and I continue see the favor of Jesus be laid upon us and will continue for generations to come. On the back of your pamphlets today you will see the scripture of psalm 91. This scripture is the backbone of our family, the scripture that my nana and baba held onto in uncertainty, continuously prayed in adversity, and will continue to be a guiding light. I encourage each of you to follow in the footsteps that my baba and nana set before us, in every battle, in every storm- God is the anchor.

Humility, the act of someone to remain modest about their own importance. My baba showed the attribute of humility throughout all his athletic years. He played all over the world, was chosen player of year in 1958, coached national teams, college teams, club teams, and school teams. The athletic achievements of my grandfather are extensive and nothing less of incredible. Nevertheless, through all of these achievements he never let his fame nor status effect the way he treated each person. Due to my grandfather’s humbleness, he used his platform as a way for coaches and players to share their skills and ideas, he was always open to new ideas and being willing to listen. Eddie David soccer camps is a testament to my baba’s humble spirit, an overqualified, professional coach, star athlete- opening his heart to the opportunity to invest in the younger generation through the sport he loved so dearly.

Although he will be remembered by most as a great soccer player and coach – to me he will be remember as the best baba.

Uncle Edison or as I referred to him as Uncle Edo was a true gentleman and a class act! Some of my most cherished and fond childhood memories were spent at his house. He provided his family with a home that was filled with warmth, kindness and love. Even as a child I was able to comprehend that. I have many beautiful memories of uncle Edo but one stands out the most. My grandfather was a man who loved to make things. One day as he was working on an item, he lost the bolt part of the nuts and bolts that he was using. I remember he made us look for it the whole day. We turned the house upside down to look for it but to no avail. That evening uncle Edo came to visit looking as cheerful as ever. He walked in with his beautiful bright smile. My grandfather complained to him that he had lost the bolt. Uncle Edo looked at my grandfather and said, “khalo (uncle) can you please check the fold at the bottom of your pants?”. Low and behold, the bolt was found. It took uncle Edo five minutes to figure out something that we spent the whole day looking for. Uncle Edo saved the day!
What an amazing legacy uncle Edo has left behind. A legacy that is etched into the minds of so many people with his beautiful and kind acts. His name is carved into so many hearts.
My deepest and sincere condolences to aunty Mary, Sylvia, David and Thomas. I pray that you will be surrounded with God’s comforting love knowing that uncle Edison is with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!
With much love and respect,
Caroline

You were like a second father to me coach. I joined your soccer team when I was 16 years old and everything I know about soccer came from you. I now coach my son and daughter and my practices are built around your practices and many times I find myself repeating your words to the kids. Your voice is always in the back of my mind but not only as a coach but as a father and a mentor. You will always be missed. Rest In Peace I know God’s angels are watching over you.

Eddie and I met at the soccer field in early 1990. I knew of Edison Eshaya's soccer fame from Iraq. I too was born in Habbaniya. Iraq but, never had the privilege of meeting Eddie in person. Though, our two families knew each other very well. At the soccer field at the Davis's High School, I was managing and playing with soccer team men over 30 . Eddie was coaching the Assyrian Civic Soccer Team. Both of our teams had practice at the same filed and that is how I had the honor in meeting the legendary professional and the international soccer player Eddie David and my childhood hero too. Eddie and I became the best of friends, our wives became good friends too. We loved Eddie and his children and his entire families, we adopted them as our own family. We had traveled and shared some great and memorable times together. I used to tell Eddie, " Eddie , we both are from the David's family but, you are the one who has the Star of David printed in his forehead", he would reply with a big smile, why?. I would reply, Eddie," whenever we meet strangers, that may be children, young boys or girls or the elderly, they all fall in love with you. Eddie , you have a million dollar smile and a great personality too". You are loved by everyone. I am jealous Eddie. Again he would put that big smile on his face, sayin it polatlitly, thank you my good friend . Eddie was a humble man a simple human being. Loved God and his family and he loved everyone. He was a faithful Christian. He was a very peaceful man. Eddie was born to play soccer. He loved all sports specially, soccer. He is the only soccer player that I know of that played and coached soccer from the moments of taken his first walking steps until the last years of his life. All of his soccer pears quite the soccer game after they retired, except Eddie , he went on in studying in Germany to become a professional coach and after he migrated to this blessed country, America, he went on with his education in obtaining a California Soccer Credentials to Certify Referees and Coaches with the legal California licenses. Whenever I was asked by Eddie to assist him in coaching, I felt so honored by this legendary giant of soccer. I was amazed of his coaching abilities. One time I went with him to assist him to coach a team that happened to be located at some mountain in Northern California, I never heard of those mountains, the team was sponsored by Actor Robert Conrad. I could not believe what I witnessed in Eddie's abilities, he was not looking at the map, he was sniffing his way to the soccer field. We used to laugh about that, I would say to him, Eddie, most times you lose your way on the lake, when we took our pontoon to Turlock Lake,he always lost his way, I would say to him, how is it that you can find these hidden soccer fields--? with a big smile on his face, he would answer me, I was born for soccer. At the end of Eddie's journey of his life, I never stopped visiting him regardless of his health condition, I kept in close contact with him with the exception of this Corona-19. Regretfully they did not allow visitors and I am so sorry for not saying goodbye to my best friend. While visiting was permitted I kept visiting him and kept our old memories alive and to see him one more time laughing. Eddie was my best friend and my brother he was a member of my family too. We shall miss him very much. May he rest in peace. May God blesses his soul and keep him as an Angels in heaven. While I am alive on this earth, I shall miss him very much. To: Mary and the family. our deepest condolences to you and to your family. We love you all.

My dearest Aunty Mary and cousins, Sylvia, David, Thomas and family,
I am deeply saddened by the news of dear Uncle’s passing. When I shared the grievous news with my husband Ninos, he said, “We have now lost a true soccer legend. He was deeply admired and loved by many. He made us proud.” Sadly, I never had the privilege of meeting Uncle though as I read his life story and the loving tributes to him, he lived a full and active life. The gift God gave him to play soccer on a professional level, not only helped him reach his personal best but it touched the lives of so many others, young and old. He earned the love, admiration and respect of his family, friends, community and country. His life journey certainly reflects a book of prized memories, the most precious one which connected him personally to our Lord Jesus Christ. RIP dear Uncle, endearingly known as Coach Eddie. May the truth of Jesus Christ and His gift of salvation strengthen and comfort you all. I love you and keep you in my prayers xxx.

Dear Aunty Mary, cousins Sylvia, David Thomas and all the David family,
Our deepest condolences for the loss of you husband and father, uncle Edison. Uncle Eddie was an amazing and well-respected man. Aunty Mary has shared many stories about uncle Eddie, his early life, his renowned accomplishments, his strength and his heart when helping others in need. We are so proud of uncle Eddie, especially because of his faith and love for Jesus, even in his late condition singing "Jesus loves me this I know..." and because his family loves Jesus. It says a lot about the man, who has such a beautiful family in aunty Mary, Sylvia, David, Thomas and his grandchildren. God's Light upon his soul! Love to all the family, God give you comfort and joyful memories to celebrate uncle Eddie's life. Many kisses and hugs from Asmar and Ashur Isaac, Sydney Australia xxx
