(this is from neighbors Jim and Carol Martin):
Jim was a generous, helpful, and often humorous neighbor. He once removed a huge snake off a neighbor’s front porch with a bucket and a shovel as two women called across the driveway, “Can you help us???” He was dressed in his pajamas, wiping shaving cream from his face, providing quick help.
Music was central in Jim’s life, more than a hobby. He liked folk music, blues, showtunes, swing, and surprisingly, bluegrass. We spent many hours compiling a list of his favorite CDs, and kept???? a copy for ourselves. The tune “Gentle on My Mind” lingers in the air waves.
He also shared his mystery books, often giving us a favorite. “Don’t worry, you don’t have to return it. I know how it ends.” Slow smile, a bit of his gentle self-effacing modesty.??????
The Pollock home was lovely during Christmas holidays as Jim and Carri anticipated the arrival of Darren‘s high school choral friends singing carols, with Carri baking cookies, and decorating the house in high expectations? for Dana and Darren’s families coming to celebrate with the grandchildren. As good neighbors, Jim and Carri warmly included us in the music, the family. His life continues in our memories, our families. We miss him.
Our love and sympathy to each of you.

I want to add one thing to Bev’s remembrance, regarding Jim’s culinary talents. In Nisswa, what was Jim invariably in charge of? Carving the chickens! Nobody else could do it like he could.
These days, a trait that always comes to mind when I think of Jim is the way he really paid attention to you when you spoke. I felt flattered. – Hey! Maybe I was finally saying something interesting and significant. After a while, I knew that a question or two would follow that look. Questions bathed in a humor that would, in a subtle and quick way, give a new, broader focus to the subject, and connect him to the speaker.
Listening, humor, caring for the other, are good ways to deal with life.
Can we do as well?
Thank you, Jim.

Have enjoyed many adventures with Jim at the bridge tables of the La Canada Flintridge Community Center. Will miss his courage and grace. In recent years I occasionally had the chance to drive him home after a day of bridge, and hear only a few hints from behind the smile of his often winning strategy. Sorry that our community has lost such a good man.

It’s 40 years later, and I still remember. I was in California, visiting Carri and Jim, and most days, we had breakfast at home. One particular Sunday morning, I was surprised to see Jim go into the kitchen. I had never seen him work in the kitchen. Carri followed. After about half an hour, we, a very young Dana and Darren and I, were called to the table. He brought in our plates, each with an omelet. Carri brought in a lavish platter of papaya halves, each with a few seeds, and strawberries. There were other breakfast goodies, hot slices of toast, jam, cream cheese, but what I remember is the omelet. It was delicious, with a special taste that I couldn’t identify. There was some sort of secret ingredient. I wondered, then, if he would tell me.
He obliged, and went down a familiar list, until he came to the last ingredient, which he added almost casually. Dry mustard. Well, it gave those omelets a surprising lift, an unexpected ‘zing’, that I had never had before, and haven’t found since. Of course, I tried it when I got home, but I never got near what he did. Not even close.
Thank you, Jim!

I remember when I was five and Grandpa taught me, Kelsea and cousin Ethan how to swing the golf club.
