It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of our dear colleague L. Hope Lewis who passed away yesterday after a courageous battle with illness. Hope was a leader within our community, a cherished colleague at Northeastern University, an intellectual trailblazer and activist in the human rights field, and a beloved friend to many of us.

She will be sorely missed. The funeral will be at Bethel AME Church, 38 Walk Hill Street, Boston, MA 02130 on Thursday, December 15, viewing at 10AM and service to commence at 11AM.

We invite you to leave a message in Hope's memory on this website.

Current Memories

From: Dan Givelber Monday, December 12, 2016
Hope personified grace under pressure. I never knew anyone who dealt with adversity with as bright a smile or as winning a manner. She was an exceptional presence at the law school, beloved by students and faculty alike. Hope's presence made the law school a better place and enriched the lives of all who were privileged to know her. She was the best.

From: Karl Klare Sunday, December 11, 2016
Dear Hope, Hallie loved you; she always asked how you were. Whenever I returned from a Law School event that was for some reason held away from the building, Hallie wanted to know: “How did Hope get there? Who gave her a ride?” When Chief Justice Langa greeted Lucy and me at a human rights law conference in Stellenbosch, his first comment was: “But where is Hope? Wasn’t she able to make it?” In a café one evening, a friend of ours shared intimate, harrowing details of his schoolboy participation in the 1976 Soweto uprising. I am sure the reason he felt safe to do this was that you conveyed trust, solidarity, and caring by your very being. You bought me one of those key-chain trinkets in Johannesburg because you knew I would like it but never get one for myself. It has been with me every day for the 20 years since. And I will carry memories of you with love, admiration, and gratitude, for the rest of my journey. Karl
