Dear family & Friends,Death is difficult to deal with but we have the hope of a resurrection from our loving God Jehovah. The resurrection hope is one of the strongest themes mentioned throughout the Bible. Keep in mind that the hour is coming, and it is now, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and they will be resurrected (John 5:28,29). Without a doubt Jehovah through his son Jesus Christ will bring to life our dead loved ones. Please look forward to that wonderful time in the near future.

Such sad news. Professor Lewis was an inspiration to me on so many levels. Her work was global, her writing was motivational, and her passion was unwavering. My sincere condolences to her family and friends.

The news of Hope's passing saddens me greatly. I keep repeating her name as though it were a mantra. Hope was her name and also her gift to us. We started teaching around the same time and got to know each other through the growing number of groups that provided community and support to women of color faculty. We also worked together on the Society of American Law Teachers' (SALT) board. I admired and respected Hope for her indomitable commitment to human rights and the rights of all people to live freely at the intersections of their lives. She lived this commitment and will leave a legacy across U.S. communities, the Diaspora and the globe that instructs us all on what it means to be human, caring, and just. My condolences to her family, friends, students, and colleagues. We will miss her. May she rest in peace. Paula Johnson, Syracuse, NY

I did not spend as many years with Hope as many of my colleagues, so I don't have many memories to share. But I will say that with a single e-mail, written during a time that she did not come into the law school, she conveyed such positive energy, warmth, and conviction that she helped me moved forward. She was truly extraordinary, and I know that she will be missed by many.

One of the most phenomenal professors, it was truly an honor to be her research assistant and to read her fabulous textbook.

I served with Hope on the Board of the ACLU of Massachusetts, where her wisdom and clear vision shaped so much of my thinking. The inspiration she leaves will always be a treasure.

I had my first conversation about law teaching with Hope Lewis. She inspired me to teach and speak truth to power. I light this candle in your memory.
