Reverend Hezzie Swain, Jr. was born on June 7, 1929 to the late Hezekiah and Katie Bell (Scott) Swain in Lewisburg, Alabama. Rev. Swain departed this life on Friday, February 10, 2017.

He accepted Christ at an early age and attended Lewisburg and Hooper City High Schools. He received a Bachelor’s Degree from the United Theological Seminary, Dayton, Ohio and was awarded a Doctorate of Divinity from Inter-Baptist Theological Seminary, Houston, Texas.

Rev. Swain served in the U. S. Army from 1948 – 1952. While stationed in Germany, he travelled throughout Europe singing and also learned to play the clarinet which gave him the opportunity to tour with the Army marching band.

Later, he moved to Dayton where he united with the Mt. Olive Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev., Dr. D. W. McFarland. At Mt. Olive, Rev. Swain not only found a church home but the woman that would become his wife of sixty years, Doris J. Banks.

Rev. Swain joined other churches in the Dayton area where he served as the director of their choirs or as Minister of Music. While a member of Revelation Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Pastor Tommie L. Dupree, he accepted his call to the ministry. He later served at Straight Way Baptist Church as assistant pastor under Rev. A. Owens.

In 1975, he was called to pastor Union Missionary Baptist Church where he served faithfully until 2008. He was also active in the Miami Valley Baptist District Association, Rev., Dr. Perry Henderson, Jr., Moderator. Upon retiring from Union, he joined Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Rev., Dr. Lavon Mann, Pastor.

Rev. Swain was employed at Defense Electronic Supply Center for 27 years, in the warehouse where he later became a supervisor. He also became the local president of the bargaining union, representing both DESC and Wright Patterson AFB civilian employees in labor disputes and negotiating national labor contracts.

Preceding him in death are his loving wife, Doris; daughter, Sheila Swain-Gurley; two sisters, Louise B. Crump and Annie Mae Ware; four brothers, Leroy, Clarence, James and Talib Abdul Salaam (Leon).

He leaves to cherish many precious memories his daughters, Denise (Rev. John) Jackson, Cynthia (Michael) Anderson, Teresa Brandon, and sons, Hezekiah, Ivan, Michael (Kim) and Sean (Ruth) Swain; brothers, Robert Swain of Hartford Connecticut and Lester (Claudia) Swain of Windsor Connecticut; brother-in-law, Evans R. Banks; 17 grandchildren: Daria (Rev. Bryant) Graham, Shalonda Looney, Rev. John R. (LaToya) Jackson, Shanell Looney-(Rueben) Ceesay, Brian Swain, Sean Thomas Swain, Chrishawna Swain, Brandy Swain, Joia Brandon, Jayton Lapley, Michelle Anderson, Jordan Brandon, Jamie Brandon, Kemit Brown Swain, Michael Swain, Jr., Sean Scott and Kierra Howard; and 10 great grandchildren: Dalaiah and Benjamin Graham, Nevaeh and JayDa Jackson, Madison Swain, Dariana, Dayiana, Dorian and Jamiah Brandon and Haley Swain; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close family friends.
