CAPT Theron “Ted” Lamont Kropp, Sr., U.S. Navy Reserve (Ret.), 85, of Annapolis, Maryland, formerly of Castine, Maine, died peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Wednesday, November 15, 2017. He was born November 25, 1931 in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He served his country honorably in Vietnam. He was the Assistant Commandant of Midshipmen at Maine Maritime Academy for many years. Ted was loved by many and will be dearly missed by all friends and family.

He will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be determined. A celebration of his life will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Castine, Maine, on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at 10:30 am.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to the Harry R. Geer, Ruth Sheridan Geer Tinges Scholarship Fund at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine, c/o MMA Development Office, Pleasant Street, Castine, Maine 04420.

Captain Kropp was my mentor and "life counselor" when I attended MMA. He is the person primarily responsible for shaping me as a young man and providing the guidance and support I needed to become a successful Marine Corps Officer and pilot. Without the sit down sessions in his office as the Regimental Commander in 1987, I would have had to the learn things the hard way. He developed me as a leader and as a person in a very short period of time. I will forever remember the smell of his pipe and the sound of his voice speaking to me and more importantly, listening to me. Thank you Captain for being there for so many people and defining what leadership is.

I had the honor to attend Maine Maritime Academy from 1980 to 1984 while Commander Kropp served there. He was the "One" officer to whom we would show absolutely no disrespect as he commanded and deserved all of the respect he received. He set a very high standard for military demeanor and conduct and showed appreciation for those who acknowledged his guidance and instruction. As the Regimental Commander during my Senior year, I was honored to spend time with him and his Company Commanders in his office after morning colors to discuss the day's planned activities. At that time, he treated me with the respect my station demanded and I will never forget that nor ever take it lightly. We dedicated our yearbook for the Class of 1984 to him and he did acknowledge he was honored by this.
MMA will not see another man like Ted Kropp as he left shoes too big to fill and a shadow that spread over years.
